An axe is a very useful tool at camp. However, it deserves extra respect as not only wood but people can get chopped. So keep your distance from your buddies, and
take your time when using an axe.
Basic
Axe Etiquette
·
A Toting Chip is required before Scouts can use a
knife on outings. The Chip MUST be on your person at all times. Failure to adhere to safety rules can cost
the holder one or more corners off the Chip, and if a severe enough infraction
occurs, you can lose the entire card.
·
An axe may ONLY be used in the axe yard.
·
Remember you are only as sharp as your axe. Keep it sharp – you’ll work easier. And a blunt axe is it requires you to
struggle to chop.
·
Adhere to the circle of safety when using a axe.
·
Don't misuse your axe.
·
Never throw it into at another person, animals,
trees or the ground.
·
Keep it clean, and if you don't intend to use it
for a while, oiled and returned to the trailer for storage.
·
Don’t leave it out in the open.
·
Rest
when you are tired as you have no control of the axe when you are tired thus creating
a dangerous situation.
·
Pass
the axe to another person by holding it vertically, head down and giving him
the toe of the handle. If you are the receiver say "thank you" to
indicate that you have a firm hold.
·
Ensure
the head of the axe is tight on the handle.
·
Wear
stout shoes or boots. Never bare feet, sandals or flip flops.
·
Always
use a chopping block under the wood you are chopping or splitting.
·
Don’t
use the axe as a hammer.
·
Make
sure you have a firm grip when you swing.
And always swing AWAY from your body.
